History
About bodega Mas Gran
The rebirth of the wines of Mas Gran in the Montsant DO, border Priorato area, began with a take-over of the family Wijnen in 2004. Mas Gran was founded by the old family Fonseca. They started in the early thirty’s (1939) with planting winestocks in different varieties. Recognising an unusual combination of topography, soil and climate, a unique “terroir”, and a one thousand year old wine-making tradition results in a superb wine. The property “Mas Gran” has an extension of 50 hectares, 2000 very old olive trees, 14 hectares are planted with old winestocks, and 3,5 hectare is new planted. Its exposure provides perfect conditions of sunlight and an ideal temperature balance, allowing an excellent maturation of grapes.
The family Wijnen updated the viniculture in Mas Gran, the walls were repaired, the stones were cleared by hand, access paths were built, training the wines on posts and wires and bringing in methods of modern vineyard management. In this way, they have improved the average yield to 1,2 kg. per wine, depending on the characteristics of each vintage. They will continue to strive to produce the finest wines from their land; they use only their own grapes in the varieties; carinena, cabernet sauvignon, garnache negre, garnache blanc, macabeu, tempranillo and syrah. It is their aim to go on improving their products, to achieve the complexity, the balance, the harmony, the grace which define them and which have earned such international fame for the wines of Bodega Mas Gran.
