Since 2000 the Priorat, a little but unique Catalan wine area nearby Barcelona, did end up on the world-wide wine list. The Priorat area has its own appellation since 2000. In Spanish that is called Denominacion dÓrigen Qualificada. The Catalan population is very proud to have its own D.O.Q. For years they work very hard making their wines, with a lot of enthusiasm and finally it is respected all around the world because of its high quality. The Priorat wine did conquer its place on wine cards of famous restaurants. It is time to discover yourself and to stock them in your own celler. A Spanish Fairytale
Don Carles Vins is the successful result of an initiative of Charles Wijnen from Amersfoort in the Netherlands. In 1999 Charles Wijnen has explored this remarkable area of the Priorat and take over an old wine bodega with beautiful vine yards. These old vineyards are situated in the beautiful area of the Ebro delta, south-west of Barcelona which bordered directly to the Priorat. The Bodega starting to plant their wine in 1939 in divers varieties. Passion, love and inspiration of excellent wines runs it like a continuous through his life. On his age of 21st he finished the Catholic Hotel Management school, the famous Castle Bethlehem, in Maastricht in the Netherlands where knowledge of vines for him already highly standard was. His total career has to do with services and hospitality sector. He has worked for example for the international family firm Martini & Rossi and other international beverage firms.
Our wines
The rebirth of the wines of Mas Gran in the Montsant DO, border Priorato area, began with a take-over of the family Wijnen in 2004. Mas Gran was founded by the old family Fonseca. They started in the early thirty’s (1939) with planting winestocks in different varieties. Recognising an unusual combination of topography, soil and climate, a unique “terroir”, and a one thousand year old wine-making tradition results in a superb wine.The property “Mas Gran” has an extension of 50 hectares, 2000 very old olive trees, 14 hectares are planted with old winestocks, and 3,5 hectare is new planted.grapes.
